Mark Frost Has No Current Plans on More ‘Twin Peaks’ Without David Lynch

It was eight years ago that “Twin Peaks” made its return with “Twin Peaks: The Return,” an 18-episode continuation of the original series that served as the show’s third season. But with the devastating passing of David Lynch earlier this year, it sounds like there’s a good chance that we’ll never see new episodes of the series that was co-created by Lynch and Mark Frost.

Prior to Lynch’s passing, however, the duo had discussed a possible “Twin Peaks” Season 4.

“We had talked a little bit about where a fourth season might go,” Frost tells Empire in the magazine’s latest issue (brought to our attention by Indiewire). “But with David having left us, it’s hard to imagine doing anything beyond this. It certainly feels like it closed the circle.”

How far along did Lynch and Frost get in their Season 4 conversations? Indiewire also points to a different interview with Mark Frost that was published by NME just last month.

Frost told NME during that chat, “We had a little bit of a recipe forming; nothing terribly formal, but it was in the wind. I felt there were uncertainties about his health, so I didn’t press him on it, but nothing really stopped the flow of his creativity.”

“We’ll see what happens. I mean, I honestly don’t know yet. It’s still kind of too soon, but it’s something I’ll get around to thinking about long and hard,” Frost said at the time.

The good news? “Twin Peaks” has remained a creator owned property, so there’s currently no chance of anyone other than Frost doing anything new with the property. As he explained to NME, “Part of our strategy going in was this was a world we had created and owned, so nobody could exploit it in destructive or stupid ways. We wanted to stay true to what we’d done, and that will certainly be my guiding principle going forward with whatever happens with the show or where it goes from here. We’ve set a standard that we have to hold ourselves to.”

“Twin Peaks” is now streaming in its entirety through MUBI.
